What is Belacan?

"Belacan" (pronounced bla-chan) is an aromatic flavor enhancing ingredient unique to Malaysian cooking. We at Belacan Grill are proud to incorporate this signature ingredient in the name of our restaurant as a symbol of the authentic Malaysian fares we serve.

Established in 2004

Malaysian cuisine is a delicate fusion of flavors originating from an assortment of ethnic Malay, Chinese, Indian, Eurasian, Nyonya, Mamak, and indigenous Borneo Island influences.

At Belacan Grill, we strive to offer the most satisfying and stimulating dining experience possible. From farm fresh poultry (all meats served are halal) to the finest selection of seafood, your palate will be delighted by only the freshest of local ingredients - all in harmony with herbs and spices blended from an assortment of ethnic influences for everybody to enjoy. The end result is a tempting array of dishes reflecting the diverse culinary heritage of Malaysia.

Our Family

Executive chef and owner, Kean Tan, was born and raised in Malaysia and offers the finest culinary expertise of Malaysian cuisine. Due to popular demand after seven successful years of the original Belacan Grill in Los Angeles, Chef Kean premieres our widely anticipated location in the O.C. in an authentic Malaysian fashion.

Every single authentic recipe we make in house has been passed down in the Tan Family for decades. Following in his father's footsteps, Chef Leroy brings a new meaning of a matchless fire to the wok. This supreme father and son duo's culminating flair makes Belacan Grill's kitchen the hottest in O.C. They welcome everybody to experience and enjoy our recipes to touch the soul.
